These swirled pumpkin cheesecake brownies are fun, festive, and easy to make! Not too sweet, with a subtle pumpkin flavor, let the kiddos help whip them up!

These swirled pumpkin cheesecake brownies are fun, festive, and easy to make! Not too sweet, with a subtle pumpkin flavor, let the kiddos help whip them up!One of my motives behind starting this blog so many years ago was to get the family more involved in the cooking and planning process. In the end, that motive has paid off! Josh has come to find the kitchen to be a retreat in the evenings when he comes home tired from work. Grace has discovered her independence and I believe much of her confidence from being able to stretch her culinary wings (She has proven to not only be capable of many baking endeavors, but also making more complex, French-inspired dinners!).

You may even remember our little Cooking with Gracie series of posts from back in the day when I would bring Grace into the kitchen with me to try out various recipes from one of her cookbooks.

Of course, I want Eden and Christian to benefit from being in the kitchen, too! Which leads me to this recipe. I think every mom struggles with balancing enough time between each kid in general, but when a new baby comes into the picture (as in our case) the struggle becomes even more challenging. I find that there are simply not enough hours in the day to take each child aside and spend one on one time with each of them! [Read more...]

Weekly Menu | Catz in the Kitchen | catzinthekitchen.com | #mealplanIt's Sunday evening and as I write this, I've got a latte sitting next to me and dinner in the oven and I'm reflecting on the day as Josh paces the floors with a hiccuping little Ruby in his arms. Today was a win in my book. We got up this morning after waking several times in the middle of the night to feed Ruby (who seemed a little fussy last night) and I got to church for the first time in probably two months. It felt good to be back! While Ruby took an extended nap afterwards, I got laundry done and then we took her for a walk.

I couldn't help thinking that today was a truly perfect fall day. The sun was out. The air was crisp, which was perfect for the oversize cardigan I threw on for our walk. The kids got outside and played - all of today felt perfectly autumn-ish, especially since we've got rain coming our way tomorrow and through the rest of the week. [Read more...]

The next time you're craving a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, try making this protein PB&J smoothie instead! It's absolutely delicious and super healthy!

A few of my pregnancy cravings have now completely faded away. For the past nine months, I thoroughly enjoyed a slice of cinnamon swirl bread daily with my breakfast. Unfortunately, now that I am four weeks postpartum, that craving is just gone. I don't want it. At all!

But some cravings have stuck around - like my love for salads! Yum - I could seriously have a side salad with every meal...however I think Christian might go to the mattresses on that one (any Godfather or You've Got Mail fans out there?)

The other craving is smoothies! I was (thankfully) able to work out for my entire pregnancy, and one of the things I enjoyed several times a week was a protein smoothie either as a snack or blended for my lunch along with a Granny Smith apple (my fave) and some string cheese! The next time you're craving a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, try making this protein PB&J smoothie instead! Tuesday’s Tidings – New Baby Gear Review Edition: Angelcare Bath Support

October 10, 2017 By Joshua Rief Leave a Comment

So, we missed a week with our little reviews of new baby gear, but we're back this week with our thoughts on Angelcare's Baby Bath Support. We've used a number of different bath supports over the years, and, frankly, have never been thrilled with any of them. The biggest issues were that they were not stable enough, too stable (as in, not flexible or comfortable), or not supportive enough for the baby. Baby would slide down the support, or squirm out - kind of a pain!

But...not so with the Angelcare Baby Bath Support! We picked this up about a month before Ruby was born (in pink, but it comes in blue and gray, too). I want to say she's had about five baths in it so far, and, wow - what a difference. It stays put in the tub - no sliding around. The frame is super stable, but the mesh that the baby sits in is flexible enough to let them be totally comfy. The shape of the bottom half supports baby's rear in just the right way, allowing them the freedom to kick their little feet and legs in the water, while still being completely fixed in place - no sliding down into the water!  [Read more...]

Weekly Menu | Catz in the Kitchen | catzinthekitchen.com | #menu #mealplanHey there everyone, I hope you all had a relaxing weekend and a nice Columbus Day. It must be "newborn life," but I'm having the hardest time keeping my days straight. Or maybe it's just mom life, ya know? I'm sure I'm not the only one having this problem. Right?! So, apparently it is Tuesday, not Monday. My bad.

Another problem I'm having is my mums. You guys, I love this fall flower...but the flowers get brown and gross so quickly! I spent 35 minutes yesterday de-heading two of my plants so that they will hopefully rebloom and I still have three more mum plants to tend to! If anyone has any tips, I would love to hear them, because let me just tell you this - I do not have a green thumb! [Read more...]

Pumpkin Slow Cooker Turkey Chili

Pumpkin Slow Cooker Turkey Chili
If this hearty and mellow recipe for pumpkin slow cooker turkey chili doesn’t get you in the fall spirit, I don’t know what will!

If this hearty and mellow recipe for pumpkin slow cooker turkey chili doesn’t get you in the fall spirit, I don’t know what will!

This recipe for Slow Cooker Turkey Chili with pumpkin first appeared on Catz in Oct 2014. It remains a family favorite, and also happens to be naturally gluten-free and paleo, for those on specific diets. It's been updated and re-photographed just in time for fall!

Today is a very stormy day. The wind howled all night; the rain has poured all day. A neighbor's tree branch even fell into our yard. The weather is "a perfect recipe" for chili and I'm also fulfilling a promise I made on sharing more pumpkin recipes! How's that for killing two birds with one stone?! By the way, where did that phrase come from? That's awful! Who gets their kicks from killing birds with stones?

Anyways... [Read more...]

DIY Nursery Makeover

We documented our budget-friendly DIY Nursery Makeover of an unused extra bedroom from floor to ceiling! We hope you find some useful tips and tricks!

We documented our budget-friendly DIY Nursery Makeover of an unused extra bedroom from floor to ceiling! We hope you find some useful tips and tricks!

When we moved into our "new" house about two and half years ago, our girls planned to share a bedroom, so with Christian's room and the master, that left an "extra" bedroom upstairs. We debated turning the "extra bedroom" into an exercise room or an office. It briefly served as a playroom and a storage room, among other things. But when we found out we were expecting baby number four early this year, we knew for sure what that room would be - it would be a nursery.

Based on the purple and green paint the room was sporting when we moved in, we're pretty sure it was a little girl's bedroom for the prior owners (maybe a little girl with Eden's color palate, because those are her favorite colors!). It was cute for a little girl, but the paint was in need of touchup, and the carpet was over ten years old - on top of being home to dogs with the previous owners, cats with us, and kids with both! It needed to go (as, eventually, will the rest of the upstairs carpet!).

We had never owned the house we were living in when any of our other children were born, so our nursery "makeovers" had always been limited to paint, and maybe curtains. Since we were free to do as we pleased with this one, we decided to makeover the entire room, from top to bottom. We'd still do it on a budget, doing everything ourselves, and we decided to use a neutral color palate, to give the room some flexibility in the future - we could add baby girl touches with furniture and decor!

So, if you're interested to get some tips and tricks from this DIY nursery makeover...read on! [Read more...]

Weekly Menu For the Week of Oct 2nd

Weekly Menu | Catz in the Kitchen | catzinthekitchen.com | #menu #mealplanWith a newborn in the house, it feels like October just showed up in a hurry and I'm left wondering...where did the last month go? It still feels like the beginning of September, when I was anxiously awaiting Ruby's birth, and yet, this week she'll be three weeks old!

Cue all the waterworks! How is she three weeks old already???

I've got to say, though, that despite feeling overwhelmed by how quickly the clock is ticking by now that she's here, it does feel good for it to finally be October. I figure, all the comfort foods are fair game to make now. [Read more...]

Our Favorite Recipes for Pumpkin Everything

September 28, 2017 By Chelsia Rief 4 Comments

At this point it shouldn't be a secret as to how much I love ALL THE PUMPKIN THINGS! But in case you're a new reader and you don't know this about me, be warned. Like coffee and cats, pumpkin-flavored everything also happens to be my jam!

I even have a whole Pinterest board dedicated to my love of pumpkin and you better believe that I pin to that board all. year. long!

Our Catz recipe archive boasts something like 30 different pumpkin recipes, but we've narrowed this particular round up to 11 recipes that we thought you might enjoy. I honestly considered all 30, but I didn't want to overwhelm you or scare you off! Also, on some of the older ones, the pictures are...pretty awful. So I settled on a few pumpkin recipes I know you'll love. But, if you want more...I can send you off in the direction of our entire collection.

These recipes are in no particular order, because quite frankly, how is a pumpkin lover like myself supposed to choose my fave and order them from great to greatest? In my (humble) opinion, they are all the greatest, and I hope you'll agree! [Read more...]

Tuesday's Tidings - New Baby Gear Review Edition: The Baby Brezza

September 26, 2017 By Joshua Rief 1 Comment

So, now that the Tuesday's Tidings Pregnancy Updates are officially finished, we thought we would transition to another "special edition" series of Tuesday's Tiding - reviews of new baby gear! It is absolutely crazy how much new baby gear has come out even since Christian was born almost five years ago, and certainly since Grace came into the world! These won't be big, long, in-depth reviews, and we're only sharing things we like, so don't expect to see any takedowns here. Basically, think of these Tuesday's Tidings posts as tips!  [Read more...]
